A small portion of the 1821 census of Offaly has survived the Public Record Office fire of 1922. This is a very important record for Offaly and will help the serious researcher look further into his/her roots. Following are the civil parishes in Ballybritt Barony for which the 1821 census survives: Birr, Kinnitty, Seirkieran, Kilcolman, Ettagh, Aghancon, Letterluna, Roscomroe and Roscrea (part in Offaly).

We located a record of your ancestor James O'Carroll (father of Patrick) in the above census in the townland of Forelacka, parish of Kinnitty, County Offaly. Details as follows:

Trade Directories

Irish directories are an excellent source in supplying information on families. Their most obvious and practical use is to find out where precisely in the larger towns a family lived. In many cases directory entries are the only precise indication of occupation. The only classes totally excluded from all directories are, once again, the most disadvantaged, small tenant farmers, landless labourers and servants.

In our Laois and Offaly Trade Directories for 1824 there are several O'Carrolls listed, with only one James O'Carroll listed in Kinnitty. Details as follows:
